چکیده

Depending on the task or the environment, we read texts at different speeds. Recently, a substantial amount of literature has risen in the field of predicting relevance of text documents through eye-derived metrics to improve personalization of information retrieval systems. Nevertheless, no academic work has yet addressed the possibility of such measures behaving differently when reading at different speeds. This study focuses on pupil size as a measure of perceived relevance, and analyses its dependence on reading speed. Our results are followed by a discussion around the need of taking into account reading speed when using eye-derived measures for implicit relevance feedback.

Towards Inferring Web Page Relevance – An Eye-Tracking Study

We present initial results from a project, in which we examined feasibility of inferring web page relevance from eye-tracking data. We conduced a controlled, lab-based Web search experiment, in which participants conducted assigned information search tasks on Wikipedia. We performed analyses of variance as well as employed classification algorithms in order to predict user perceived Web page re...

Pupil size behavior during online processing of sentences.

In the present work we analyzed the pupil size behavior of 40 subjects while they read well-defined sentences with different contextual predictability (i.e., regular sentences and proverbs). In general, pupil size increased when reading regular sentences, but when readers realized that they were reading proverbs their pupils strongly increase until finishing proverbs' reading. Our results sugge...

Systematic influence of gaze position on pupil size measurement: analysis and correction

Cognitive effort is reflected in pupil dilation, but the assessment of pupil size is potentially susceptible to changes in gaze position. This study exemplarily used sentence reading as a stand-in for paradigms that assess pupil size in tasks during which changes in gaze position are unavoidable. The influence of gaze position on pupil size was first investigated by an artificial eye model with...

Assessing Cognitive Load in Adaptive Hypermedia Systems: Physiological and Behavioral Methods

It could be advantageous in many situations for an adaptive hypermedia system to have information about the cognitive load that the user is currently experiencing. A literature review of the methods proposed to assess cognitive load reveals: (1) that pupil size seems to be one of the most promising indicators of cognitive load in applied contexts and (2) that its suitability for use as an on-li...

The effect of dioptric blur on reading performance

Little is known about the systematic impact of blur on reading performance. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of dioptric blur on reading performance in a group of normally sighted young adults. We measured monocular reading performance and visual acuity for 19 observers with normal vision, for five levels of optical blur (no-blur, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3D). Dioptric blur was induce...
